Pretend we're in the middle ages when people did not know that the earth is round. With this in mind, let me rephrase the question so we can visualize things on a much smaller scale.

"How many steps would it take to get to the end of the earth?"

Of course it's a fact that the earth has no end, since it's round. If you walk in a straight line, you will only reach your point of origin once you circumnavigate the globe. The world only looks flat or two dimensional, when it really isn't.

Now, the universe only looks the way it is in three dimensiona because we cannot see it from a "higher" perspective (like how you see the sphere of the earth in space). It is possible that our three-dimensional universe is also curved into a higher fourth dimension much like a flat earth which is really a sphere. In this case, you will only theoretically return to your place of origin if you "walk" in a straight line in outer space. There may really be no end. But then, who knows?
