I believe that the only way to learn math is by solving problems of varying difficulty. It is not a subject that can just be read. One of a series of books that I enjoy is by the late K.A Stroud titled "Engineering Mathematics". It is perfect for self study, and it really focuses on establishing a solid foundation. It begins with basic math, (algebra) and continues through Calculus. But the key is to practice, practice, practice.
Good Luck.

Try doing mental sums daily from everyday routines eg work out the price of a sale item after discount. Also, have you heard of Kumon, it's a simple to follow course that has proven to be very successful by doing a little everyday.
