in a football game the edmonton eskamos scored 9 more points more then th montreal alouettes sixty-one points were scored in all what was the game score???

Define X to the unknown. Lets say the alouettes are X.
Then we know that the eskamos scored 9 more points then the alouettes. Therefore, the eskamos scored alouettes + 9 or X+ 9.

The total score is 61. That mean alouettes score + eskamos score must equal 61 (only two teams right!).

Alouettes (x) + eskamos (x + 9 ) = total score (61)

x + x + 9 = 61
2x + 9 = 61
2x + 9 - 9 = 61 - 9 (What you do to one side, do to the other)
2x=52
x = 26 (divide both sides by 2)

Now, fill it back in
Alouettes = x = 26 points
Eskamos = x + 9 = 35 points

If you let Eskamos = x, the problems would look like this
Eskamos = x
Alouettes = x - 9
x+ (x-9) = 61
2x - 9 = 61
2x = 70
x = 35

Eskamos = x = 35 and
Alouettes = x - 9 = 26 !
