Exercise helps a lot. Finding a spiritual center also helps, but the exercise can provide almost immediate relief. At least 30 minutes of heart-pumping exercise (a dance video, brisk walk or run on the treadmill or in a safe area, etc) will release seratonins that help you feel content and happy.
Certain vitamins and amino acids can also help. Although, you need to talk with a specialist doctor or nutrionist first, he or she would probably advise b-12 and tyrosine supplements. If it's possible you are iron deficient, that will also contribute to depression. A mild, easily digested iron supplement can help.
Certain foods can trigger feelings of depression, especially those high in bad (as opposed to "good") fats. Good fats are Omega-3s and 6s such as found in walnuts, salmon, and flax. There are also good carbs versus bad carbs. Bad carbs such as refined sugars and processed grains spike your blood sugar levels, which then drop and leave you feeling down.
This is just a quick go-over on some of the things that can contribute to or alleviate depression. Head to the bookstore and browse resources that can help you out in more detail.

for myself, I have found that staying in touch with family and friends helps. I enjoy writing letters, walking , reading, and nature. If I can find a quiet spot by a creek, or a pond, etc..and sit there listening to the water trickle, the birds chirping, watch the squirrels scampering about, and just talk to God. listen to his words of solace from the very air I breathe, is all so refreshing. Good Luck and God Bless....
each one of us has to find the way that works best for us

Read the book of Psalms that is where you will find peace within yourself. I know from experience I've turned to the bible for comfort and understanding. Take all your cares to God in prayer he hears your soul cry out to him.
