The ancient Greeks didn't believe in reincarnation, which meant they had to live this life to the full - being as brave as they could and make sure to die in glory.

the greeks upheld the idea of Xenia or as we know it hospitality. but they would not just offer something to drink or eat they would house the guest as long as they needed it and give them lavish gifts. they also strongly believed in self-honor, intelligence, bravery and a dying love for your country.
