Hi All,

Me and my husband are planning to rent a place in the northern suburbs like Salisbury,Elizabeth,Smithfield or Gawler. We are searching in these areas as its convenient for both of us to travel to our work.

Our preference is Salisbury or Gawler

Could any of you let me know if these areas are safe and good to stay.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,
Shilpa

Gawler is definately in the news (on the crime beat, so to speak) less frequently than Elizabeth and Salibury. The northern suburbs seem to be involved with a bit of gang related activity right now, as well as more than just a little unemployment and the crime that unemployment brings. This is not to say, "stay away", but should be viewed as a warning that the neighborhoods may be spotty, and you need tolock your doors and keep your car off the street. Your personal safety should not be an issue there if you are careful. Gawler is a busy town, almost rural, almost urban, with a lot of traffic and a fair amount of noise on the main streets during the day. Crime is a bit less of a problem. Pleasant parks, adequate shopping, and the train originates there to get you into the CBD of Adelaide. There are a lot of nice older houses there, but the last I checked, rentals are not easy to come by. Virginia (north and a little west of Adelaide, over near the water) is a nice area, as well, but convenient public transportation into the city is not available. That area is more to my liking, because it is quieter, a bit less traffic than Gawler. Good luck finding a place. Hope you love Adelaide area and that the future treats you well!

Crime in the Northern suburbs isn't too bad, particularly when you compare it on a per capita basis with areas like Port Adelaide. But, some of the old Housing trust areas in Davoren Park, Smithfield Plains, and Salisbury North look pretty bad, while new housing estates where they're still building can have some problems too. In the Salisbury area Salisbury Plain, Gulfview Heights and Salisbury Heights are all pretty good, and in Gawler steer clear of the areas close around the High School , and Gawler West.

As with all towns some parts are better than others. I have family living in Salisbury, Elizabeth and Gawler and they all seem to have a great life and are raising healthy children. Housing Commission areas tend to be a little more rundown than areas where people own their own homes but your real estate agent should be able to help there.

People tend to thing Australia can not be invaded because it seems so remote. But that didn't stop the British from invading in the nineteenth-century, and (as noted) the Japanese sure looked like they intended to invade in 1942. I would agree that it is not impossible. However.... At the moment China's military is pretty much faced internally. They succeeded in projecting their power a few hundred miles outside their boarder in Korea in 1950, and less then that in Vietnam in 1979. After all these years of saber rattling they still have not been able to launch an invasion of Taiwan. That isn't to say they could not direct their industrial might to building an invasion fleet and launching an invasion, but it would take them several years of concentrated effort to be able to mount such an operation. It took the US and UK almost three years to launch D-Day. This time would give the Australian government and its American and British allies (who already of the capability of projecting their power where ever they want) to reinforce the Continent. I think that Australia should keep a really close eye on China, but I do not see an eminent danger to your country at this time....

Stick to Gawler - Elizabeth, Smithfield and Salisbury can be quite rough.
