chemical

gold is an element unaffected by oxygen, or oxidation

it is basically inert

D. Corrosion is a chemical reaction, not a physical change.

Test tip: you can easily eliminate B and C because they are not anything that you ever learned about in class. Then you just have to think about physical vs. chemical properties.

wrong wrong wrong, HNO3 and HCl = aqua regia

Dissolving gold

Aqua regia dissolves gold, even though neither constituent acid will do so alone, because, in combination, each acid performs a different task. Nitric acid is a powerful oxidizer, which will actually dissolve a virtually undetectable amount of gold, forming gold ions (Au3+). The hydrochloric acid provides a ready supply of chloride ions (Cl-), which react with the gold to produce chloraurate anions, also in solution. The reaction with hydrochloric acid is an equilibrium reaction which favors formation of chloraurate anions (AuCl4-). This results in a removal of gold ions from solution and allows further oxidation of gold to take place, and so the gold is dissolved. In addition, gold may be oxidized by the free chlorine present in aqua regia. (Wikipedia, 2007)

Chemical I believe. You see Au is in the middle of the periodic table, in the metals. It is far form the highly reactive ends, and therefore does not react much with anything else. It is itself and can stand alone. Metals, it doesn't oxidize b/c there is not spot for O to attach. I could be way off. Tired.

It's D, chemicla property, because corrosion occurs when an element reacts with oxygen...and gold is not a reactive metal and does not react with oxygen. And that is its chemical property.

D - Gold is a stable metal and won't bond with oxygen to corrode.

D. because Gold does not react with Oxygen.

a and d. Gold is one of the noble metals, noble metals do not oxidize, corrosion is based on oxidization. Gold doen't bond to oxygen.
