It is true that the release window between theatrical release and home video release does vary, depending upon box office success (disappointing box office returns can usually assure a quick transition to DVD), or seasonal releases (i.e., a yuletide theatrical release, more than likely will not see home video release until the following year's yuletide season).

The average home video release window originally ranged between 8 to 10 months; obviously, that window has narrowed, over the years, to what it is today (approx. 3 to 4 months). Expect that window to narrow even more, as the motion picture home video distributors struggle to combat movie pirating and illegal downloads.

We may just get to the point where a first-run motion picture is simultaneously released on the big screen, on home video, and on the cable broadcast market.

If the movie is a blockbuster it only takes around 3 or 4 months. Unless the company that made it has other plans about the release. For example take Deck the Halls and The Santa Clause won't come out until the end of the year. Now 300 should be out by the end of July or the middle of August.

Lately, movies have been moving to home distribution much quicker. It seems like DVDs, PPV, and even premium cable airings are out less than a month after the film leaves heavy rotation in the theaters. I have even seen movies with DVD availability while the movie is still playing at the local budget theater. I would expect almost any movie in theaters now to be available by Thanksgiving, ready for Christmas shopping lists.

No movies are released in theatres and DVD, so I dont know what that guy was talking about.

It is anywhere from 3-4 months, and no different if the movie was a hit, if it was chances are it will be in theatres longer, but they wont delay the DVD of it.

Usually between 3 to 4 months. Less if the movie was a really, really huge hit.
