It all comes down to what the basketball team needed. Before the draft, Dumars went out and got Chauncy and Rip, therefore they did not need Melo, Wade, or Hinrick. What they needed was a center. Durring that draft there was no really good offensive center so they got the best that they could. I am sure that the scouts saw potential but all of us know that some players do not transition well in the NBA. Honestly, I dont know what the hell they were thinking when it came to Bosh. They had Ben Wallace( great defender, not any offensive talent) but they did not aquire Rasheed until late that year. Chris Bosh should have been picked up by Detroit, there is no excuse for that one. I'm no sure but I think Larry Brown had something to do with that pick.
We must also remember that knowone knew how good Wade would be. Melo was only an offensive player and that was not what Detroit was looking for. But not taking Bosh, that was retarded. I honestly think he deserves more credit, like being on the ballet for MVP.

Detroit's undertaking is a classic case of Portland taking Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley. i'm not asserting that D-Wade is MJ or Bosh is Barkley yet you will discover the blunders they made via passing on 2 destiny stars. Their coach on the time Larry Brown, isn't even with the group top now. I guess Joe Dumars is in all probability kicking himself for passing up on Carmelo Anthony too. The Pistons made a qualifying supply of Chauncey Billups and Tayshaun Prince for Melo over the summer season, just to have it rejected of their face. They ended up having to settle for Allen Iverson as a replace yet who might understand what variety of group Detroit may well be top now if that they had taken a flyer on Wade, Bosh, Melo, David West, Josh Howard, or perhaps Chris Kaman. i think of this may well be a determination this is going hang-out Dumar's administration profession and the Piston's corporation for years yet to come.

Because Detroit needed a big man at the time so they went with Darko. That didn't work-out so they next got Rasheed. And they won a championship. So it actually did work for them in the long run.
That pick wasn't as bad as the Blazers did in '84 when they took Sam Bowie as the 2nd pick over Jordan. For the same reason.

Darko was a project. I think the Detroit team and scouts understand that. It was a risk, and Detroit and it's management understood that it was either make or break. Unfortunately it didn't happen for Detroit and is slowly getting well for Orlando. So Detroit's loss is Orlando's gain.

They didn't need Wade and Hinrich because they had Billups and Hamilton who are both all-stars. They had Tayshaun Prince who put Kobe in handcuffs during the championships so they didn't need Anthony. What they did need was a center who could score. Milicic is a seven footer with excellent range and everyone is looking for the next Dirk. I don't think he had a fair chance in Detroit.

I know, then trade him! The answer is because that was a horrible draft pick. Imagine if they would have picked one of the mentioned players! Detroit may have been a dynasty with Wade, Melo or Bosh.

Darko has a lot of upside, but since he went to an established place like the Pistons he doesn't see much game time anyhow.

The team was looking for an international player but had the wrong pick. And they really have the worst scouts in the world....

because Melo, DWade, and Bosh would not have been all-stars now if they picked one of them. Lucky for all of them, they didn't go to Detroit. Their talents and skills would not be showcased there since Detroit is a defensive team. They would come off the bench and would have rusted their games. Thanks to Detroit. they are stars now!
