I believe it is a status thing like raising orchids or smoking good cigars. Someone who is well educated will be able to discern the slight nuances in Scotch. Each "brand" of Scotch comes from a specific place and has a signature taste. I went pub crawling in Scotland, love Scotch but hate the smell without a splash of water. Scotch is a acquired taste but if they are a true aficionado, they deserve credit for their snobbish tastes, they put a lot of time into learning good Scotch.

I am a huge whiskey lover! I like it because when you first take a sip you get this slight tingle in your mouth and jaw. Then, when you swallow it you get this warm sensation trickling down your gullet. Then at the end you just get this explosion of warmth in the pit of your stomach. Of course it depends on which whiskey you try. Irish whiskies are smoother sometimes, but that depends on the Scotch too. My personal favourites are Oban, Macallan, Laphroag and Glenfiddich. Some good whiskies are very smooth indeed. It's just a case of trial and error in finding a good one to suit your personal taste.

It's definitely an acquired taste. I've tried it three or four times, single malt, blended, different brands each time and it just tastes like crap to me. I guess that's why I'm a beer man if I partake of alcohol. Like the famous statesman Ben Franklin said," Beer is proof that there not only is a God, but that he loves us and wants us to be happy." LOL :)

Nonetheless, if I do sip the occasional whiskey - I make it Kentucky bourbon or Tennessee sour mash. OOHRAH

But for all you Scotch lovers out there.... God Bless ya and you drink what you darn well please, and enjoy yourself immensely; but I really don't know how you do it.

There are different types. Blended scotch whiskey, scotch, whiskey, single malt scotch....the list goes on. I personally don't like it.

Excellent question!!Why do people like scotch, just the smell of it makes me want to hurl,I wouldn't touch that stuff if there were nothing else around for miles and I had to drink it for survival.......because then quite possibly I would be craving something else I couldn't get my hands on. No I would just rather die thirsty and without scotch on my breath for the paramedics that finally come to rescue me....and fail because well, I wouldn't drink that D*** scotch. My pride and integrity still intact I must face yet another "what if".Thank you.

Fans of scotch are similar to fans of wine in that they enjoy trying different scotches. Each variant has its own special differences, some subtle, some more noticeable.

The UFC is not an acquired taste. It's universally loved by all.
