Hi,

I am considering getting a legal name change and i currently live in Connecticut. I was wondering does it matter which state you get a name change from because i used to live in new york about 4 years ago and i got my citizenship paper there too.

thanks

It shouldn't matter as long as you are not trying to hide something. The judge might ask why you filed in one state if you live in another. They can be real nosy about this type of thing.

No court will have jurisdiction to permit a name change except the court in the jurisdiction in which you are a resident. Living in New York 4 years ago does not make you a resident. You must go to the Connecticut courts. Further, a minor who is not legally emancipated may not change his or her name without parental consent.

As long as it is done in a court of law, then it is valid. Then you must submit it to Social Security, Drivers license office, and that should clear it up with everyone and make it universal
