I have gotten my boxes from wal-mart. The great value marshmallow boxes are the best. They may not seem to be that big, but you can put a whole lot into them. You will also need some boxes that are a bit bigger for items that are not flexible and / or need more space than the marshmallow boxes. One word of advice - stick with boxes that are on the smaller side of things. Big boxes are clumsy, can be hard to move depending on what you filled it with, and with the weight they have a better chance of breaking up on you.

copier paper boxes are great for moving, books small stuff ..
Nice thing is they do not get overloaded and too heavey.

Go to a copy place like Kinko's or ask anyone who works in a office for copier paper boxes.

Also Toys R Us has a assortment of boxes - but they crush them fast so you may have to be there when the unload the stock to the shelf.

Harbor Freight Tools throws out boxes all day. Heavey duty ones at that.

Just a few ideas:
Try local freecycle forums.
Local grocery stores/ fruit stands usually have boxes, some recycle--some don't.
Local alcoholic beverage stores--usually have lots of boxes;
again some recycle--some don't.
Furniture stores might have some boxes available.
Might can get some packing boxes by asking at office supply places.

You could go to any retail store and ask for boxes. You could go to a local recycling center and ask if they have some available to you. You could ask your friends and family to save them up for you whenever they find one. Some moving companies give away free boxes if you hire them.

You can get free boxes from Departmental stores, grocery shops and Medical stores. I prefer old boxes of refrigerators, big TV boxes :)
