The order is PEMDAS (parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction).

Let's put it to use:
12 - 4(3 - 5)2 ÷(-1)

Parentheses:
= 12 - 4(-2)2÷(-1)

Exponents (there aren't any)

Multiply and divide: so we have 4 times -2 times 2 divided by -1. Just go in order. That's 4 * (-2) = -8. That times 2 is (-16). That divided by (-1) is 16. Don't forget the 12 at the beginning.
= 12 - 16

Add and subtract:
= -4

If you need clarification on any step, let us know.

Remember: PEMDAS!
