Depends on what they consider to be status symbols. BMW's are considerably more expensive than commercial run of the mill SUV's and pickups. Now if you want a real status symbol you could opt for a porsche or a jag. It all depends on where you live because where I live it seems that Lincoln Navigator and Hummers are the new status symbols for wives of well to do men. I live in Monterrey Mexico. A BMV is not exactly a status symbol here, at least among the very rich.

It depends on the environment you live it. In a large city a BMW might be status car, but in a more rural, or small city, a SUV is a better choice. Try driving a Beemer on a potholed gravel road or even load the little league team in one. Not a chance. With today's extended families with multiple children from current and previous marriages, and a big SUV makes more sense. Couple that with the survivability factor in a bad wreck, and the reasoning makes even more sense.
Some people, me for example, have too much trouble getting in and out of a smaller car and walking afterward. The more upright position while driving is less stressful on the spine. For many people comfort is more important the economy.

For the same price as a beamer...you can buy a luxury SUV or fully loaded pick-up. Now you have status, plus utility. Try towing a 30 foot boat with a BMW. And with a few added aftermarket goodies....your new shinny truck/suv can run faster, haul more, and be twice as shinny as a new lill BMW. The choise only seems obvious to me!!

One thing to consider is if the truck has a tow hitch it maybe used to drag the boat status symbol to the beach.

Trucks and SUV's have a practical side. BMW just says I like to spend money on me and my mechanic. Also more then 75% of the time no one you know sees you getting in or out of your car. Generally impressing strangers is useless, and as for status while driving - any polite driver has status with me no matter what they are driving.

Personally, I drive both (audi + jeep) right now but am looking to get rid of my german counterpart. After only 2 years I have grown tired of babying a piece of metal. My Audi can't keep itself clean and an oil change costs almost $200 (admittedly at the dealer). The jeep can't keep itself clean either but it looks good a little "unshaven." The Audi is definitely much nicer and they both are A/4WD but the jeep can do anything!

BMW's can't tow the boats & campers to the weekend vacation homes of the rich & famous.

Don't know about status symbols. But a BMW isn't worth crap to me on my farm. My F-250 is.

Would you rather be in my big 4X4 heavy duty truck or a BMW if we were heading straight for each other at 70 mph?
