Carfax reports will not tell you the names of owners, but will tell you how many owners a vehicle has had. Plus, any time a vehicle was taken back into a mainstream mechanic or a dealer they will generally log the odometer reading and notes on maintenance performed (as well as the address of the mechanic or dealer). This will also appear in the carfax report, especially for vehicles that have been *dealer* maintained!

I do titlework for a auto dealer and unless someone makes a very big mistake you will never know who owned the car before you when purchased from a dealer. The department of motor vehicles will only release previous owner info to dealerships.

I was a little surprised to read the answers above. I believe in KY it is required that if you ask the dealer, he must give you the name and phone number of the previous owner.
If the previous owner has refused or will not allow the new owner to contact him, then the delaer will devulge that info if you ask him for it. At least I think that's the way it works.

I was in exactly the same position a few months ago. Kept getting lots of identical letters for a previous occupant, so returned them to sender. They kept coming so I just binned them. Eventually I opened one and it was from a debt collection agency. I rang them and they wanted all my details which I was not prepared to give them. I gave her the name of the letting agency we rent from, and have heard nothing from them since. Obviously if you own the house you can't do this. Remember that the only people who can send bailiffs are the Courts. Debt Collection agencies buy bad debt from companies for a fraction of the outstanding amount and then use bullying tactics and empty threats to try and get the money back. They are just grubby little private companies run by grubby little people and they have no legal powers whatsoever. If anyone does come to your door, tell them to leave and call the police. They will ask for ID to prove you're not the person they're after - don't show them any. You don't have to prove your identity to a stranger from a private company when you are in your own home!

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.
Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

You can ask the person selling it to you, but anyone who came before doesn't want to hear about a car they don't even own anymore.
Previous maintainance is not an issue that is discussed, because you usually buy a vehicle "as is" There are services you can pay to find out what the vehicle history is, but its not going to include everything. Mostly just crashes, etc..

i own a shop and it wont give you the names of the owners, the best way to find this out would be to do a title search and find out who all has owned it before, and this may be hard to do,usually previous owners don't want to be bothered by this once they get rid of a car that's why they came out with the privacy protection act,so people don't get contacted about things like this,if you know someone who knew the owner of the car you might could find out about it,but car fax wont help you on this matter, good luck i hope this helps.

Carfax gives no names, only emission checks, dates of title changes, and sometimes repairs. You may be able to go to your local Clerk of Courts, Auto Title Department, and do a little back title checking. Talk nice to the ladies behind the counter and they might just help you. Good luck.
