my pond has clams in it, and i was wondering if they would survive in a tank and if i did get some, what would they eat? could they break the glass if they squirted their bodies into the glass?

Yes, you can keep them - I've had freshwater clams and mussels in tanks before.

I'd suggest starting with smaller ones if possible, until you get the hang of keeping them - if they should die, they'll foul your water less. They will need a somewhat deeper gravel bed as the grow - they like to be oriented so they're partly buried, and you have to put them so the foot is down - otherwise they can't feed properly. To know which end is the foot, it's the side the "point" on the shell is closest to - see picture: http://universe-review.ca/I10-82-clam.jpg Just stand them on edge so they can open and feed - see picture: http://www.maine.gov/dmr/rm/aquarium/teachers_guide/softshellclam.jpg they'll adjust themselves to the correct depth.

Clams are filter feeders, so you'll need to use a fine material to feed them. You can buy invertebrate food and fry food at pet/fish stores, or used finely crushed fish flakes or pellets for feeding. Be careful how much you add to the tank, though - all these will clog your filter and add to the ammonia-nitrite-nitrate in the tank.

If they're oriented properly, I've never had problems with them moving at all, let alone moving fast enough to break the glass or anything in the tank.

Just be aware that some types of freshwater clams get to be 5" or more, and will most likely be to big to keep in your tank for a long period of time.

Yes you can put fresh water clams in your tank. They are filter feeders and will filter out food from your water. NO they will not break your glass???? where did you get that from? Only scallops can shoot a strong stream that way and not even hard enough to break or crack glass. I have a number in my Koi ponds outside. (some came from the local lake into my tank then out side) They are fine to keep with no problems.
