1) She put it in her pocket, not you. This is just a lesson in why you don't leave things in your pocket.
2) Make a plan for her to work chores around the house to earn another one. Maybe look at something larger than the nano.
Please don't do just buy her a new one. Yeah, it's a terrible but just buying her a new one isn't going to prove anything. Chances are it will just happen again. Give HER responsibility.

If there is no visual damage - buy a new one at a store, put the broken one in the new box and return it!
I know, I know this is aweful but it works - anyway those stores and Apple have plenty of money - in my eyes you aren't hurting them!
Good luck!!
By the way, now is the time to explain to the 13 y.o. she needs to be a bit more responsible and if it happens again you will not bail her out. You do not need to tell her how you replaced it!

Ouch! I'm afraid those Nano's are not very waterproof or heat proof. Now would be a good time to teach your daughter to empty her pockets, and if you can afford it buy her another one. Accidents happen.

Send it back to Apple. They will send you a new one. It's still under warranty if the grandfather just bought it recently.
This exact same situation happened to my sister's ipod mini. Apple is a great company and they will send you a box to package it in, and then they'll send you a new one free of charge.

The same thing happened to my sister, but it was her cell phone! My mom had bought it for her for her b-day. My mom was so mad at her that she was careless enough to leave it in her pocket. In my opinion, it was her responsibility to keep her Nano safe. I say you're in the clear, and it will be a lesson foe her to learn

That is called a lesson learned the hard way. Tell her what happened. If she wants a new one, she needs to save up for it. Maybe she will learn to empty her pockets from now on.

get a new ipod because the battery is not water resistant unless it has a warranty, then u should take it back and tell the store where her grandfather bought it from what happened. IF ITS ON WARRANTY U MIGHT REPLACE IT AT NO COST!!!!!1

Put it somewhere warm and dry for a couple of days then try it.
I have managed to wash a couple of watches, a mobile phone and multiple mp3 players - they all survived.
Good luck
