All they expect you to do is to hand in your assignments. Then you ask them to let you take the exam. Show them your notes and tell them that you feel prepared to take the exam and hope like heck they let you write it. Say please. And thank you.

I'm a college instructor. Trust me, we all know when you're feeding us a line of crap. We may just sigh and go about our days because we're tired of the other 100 students who didn't show up to class and want to give us some crappy excuse, but we always know. We're not idiots. If we can get through 12 years of higher education, we can see through your bogus story.

Some good ones I've gotten:

Grandmother died. (For some reason, as soon as freshman start college, their grandparents all drop dead.)

Arrested.

Marti Gras (that was brilliant. to think I'd excuse an absence because she went to booze it up.)

Roommate locked student out of room.

Boyfriend is trying to kill her.

In labor. (which she really was, so I let that one go. but she showed up 5 days after giving birth)

Forgot he signed up for the course. (this one was brilliant. he didn't remember to attend class all semester.)

Good luck...
