It is believed that the rings are the end result of collissions of Saturns Moons and with 64 of them thats quite a billiard game. The gravitational field of Saturn and sheparding effects of Saturns moons keep the rings in line. the brightest parts of the rings are 45,000 miles (72,000km) wide, and about 500ft or 150meters thick.

The answer to your first question is the rings appear to be debris left over from an exploded or disintegrated moon. The second question's answer is that the powerful gravity of Saturn keeps the debris in a ring.

The rings are actually satellites orbiting the planet.
The outer rings orbit slower than the inner rings.
It is a really complicated arrangement,some light rings actually twist around each other.
But the rings are satellites.
