To support the woman's breasts and restrict the amount of up and down movement which stretches the muscles above and below the breasts. It also reduces the pain caused by that movement.
Bras should not be used to raise the breasts, except on very special occasions when extra a bit of "extra size, prominence and beauty" are required..
Bras, which were only invented at the end on the 19th Century, (about 1892-94), if used incorrectly, have a minor contributing factor to breast cancer, as well as being a cause of bad back and shoulder pain.

here is a few reason's, and now i have larger breasts so you know my source is reliable!
wearing a bra, keeps the girls up where they "belong" and from sagging in the long run!
wearing a bra (a proper fitting one mind you) helps from bouncing and swaying while walking/working/working out etc. It is pain full to have them moving around
wearing a bra gives you something to spend money on
wearing a bra is a savor during strip poker!
wearing a bra really is just something you do! It's really not a pain, if you have a properly fitting one its just another piece of clothing to take off and put on!!
oh wearing a bra is a fun way to trick guys, some poor souls have issues taking them off! they need to know that some close in the front, some close in the back, and some have like 8 clasps!!!

It's a modern torture device. LOL I hate them but lets face it ladies when you get older things start to head south. I never wear one at home but just if I am going out. And if I'm wearing a coat in the winter and I know I won't be taking it off I don't bother with one then either.

To support the breasts. They are really heavy and it is uncomfortable having them swing all over the place without a bra.

imagine having a ball of fat with a very sensitive area attached to it rubbing up and down on clothing all day. it hurts if it isn't supported. dont have boobs myself but just a hunch.
