How cool that you understand what's happening, and want to do something about it....
There's a long answer I posted in another thread that you might want to read for ideas too... it has to do also with just figuring out what you might be interested in to pursue as hobbies, etc.:

And another (shorter) one here on spending time "usefully" has some good ideas:

My first suggestion to everyone who asks this sort of question is always knitting! Might have something to do with my personal obsession...
Anyway, for me, knitting is theraputic and almost meditative. When you're concentrating on a pattern, it's hard to think about other things. Of course, there's also the constructive part of it - you've got something to show for it when you're done.
And, YES, there are men out there who knit. Their numbers may be a little lower than the women, but they ARE out there. When I travel, I see them sitting in the airport with their knitting projects, just like me.
There are lots and lots of local knitting groups out there. Most likely, the local yarn shop has one, filled with people willing to help you get started. Most yarn shops give lessons, too. My local yarn shop gives really basic beginning lessons for free. There's also the added bonus that, when you're ready, you may meet a really nice woman who shares your new-found love of knitting!
Okay, okay, so that maybe only happens in my weird little mind, but it really IS a good hobby.
Good luck to you, in your life and with your hobbies.

coin collecting, stamp collecting, making bird houses for the wild birds, rc cars, rc planes, rc heliocopters, get a motor bike and take long rides, you wont think of anything but the dust in your nose and the pain in your butt. bild a model railroad, military models, playboy models, well ok maybe not that. sca is great, or civil war reinactments, mountain man groups, ducks unlimited, the antique machinery assn. I think the ageless iron show is in iowa or something in july or so, if you like old tractors, trucks and steam traction engines.

try fishing sometime. If you dont have any tackle, and have never been fishing before, you can buy everything you need for about 40 to 50 bucks. Its a blast. Its a great hobby if you like to be outdoors. If you dont like fishing, try joining a gym.

You could volunteer at your local SPCA. They are always needing people to help out with the cats and dogs. You would be doing a good deed and getting free therapy.

How about geocaching? We hide stuff on each other and use our GPS to find it. Or if your ex-girlfriend left you too poor to buy a GPS receiver, there is letterboxing, where you just use clues to find the treasure.
