I prefer a female, not only because I know she has to go through the same thing she is doing to me and is going to be more gentle because of that, but also because her hands are smaller.

When I had some kind of infection...my female ob/gyn couldn't tell me what was wrong with me. I tried a few antibiotic pills but none of them worked....so I went see a male ob/gyn and his first antibiotic worked like a magic. Also, there is only a few female ob/gyns out there...and everybobody I know prefer female ob/gyn...therefore sometimes you have to wait 4-5 weeks until you can finally see her after making an appointment.

I have been to both, male and female. I am currently seeing a male and am very happy with him. My whole pregnancy I was seen by mostly female mid-wives and ob/gyns and had no problems in that department. It wasn't until about 8 1/2 months ago when I started having menstruation problems that I decided I liked male doctors better. I went to 3 or 4 different female gyns and they all shrugged me off like nothing was wrong, and that my daily chronic pelvic pain and periods every 2 weeks was just "normal pain women have to go through". I am finally seeing a doctor who wants to find out what is wrong with me, and not mask the problems. That characteristic can be found in both male and female doctors. Either gender of doctors were able to find out I have cystic ovaries and a hormonal imbalance, who knows what else, but this one just happens to be male. First of all you need to make sure your doctor is good at what they do and believe in finding and treating the patient's medical problem, not just the side effects.

I prefer female OB/GYNs. I've experienced the care of male OB/GYNs on two different occasions and my experience with both of them was not good. In both cases they didn't listen to me when I told them something wasn't right. And neither of them were gentle with me when I have had my pelvic exam and pap smear done every year. I find that a female physician when it comes to my gynecologic needs listen better than male doctors. My thought is that if you are more comfortable with your female doctor and her skill is good (both bedside manner and skill are important to me which is a big reason why I prefer female physicians) then I would say stick with her. But please continue to weigh your options so that you can have the doctor that works best for you on all levels.

I prefer female. But then I'm not that comfortable with guys seeing my body...only one has so far and that is the way I intend to keep it!!!!
My doc is very understanding and compassionate, she puts me at ease immediately so I am always comfortable with her.
But if your mother is worried about a female OB/GYN taking sexual interest in her private parts, doesnt it stand to reason that a male would do the same?
But thats just my opinion....

Your mother is the weird one and so is my mother. My mother doesn't like sex or man for that matter but she doesn't have a problem having a male doctor look at everything she has.Now
me on the other hand have a big problem letting a man look at me.If you tell a male doctor you feel bad because you have your period or it hurts when you have sex, do you think he has any idea
what you are going through of cruse not how can he,he's no woman.

some people are more comfortable with a fe-male because they have the same body parts and that makes them comfortable. PERSONALLY i perfer a male, Im not sure why even but I would rather have a male poking around than a nother women and then maybe i dont know judging my parts or whatever! Plus I know this sounds bad but my Dr. is cute so im not as wound up about seeing him! Im a laid back person any way so either way not a big deal!

ok, first...lol on "the gay"! i guess that's your mom's terminology, funny. seriously though, you should see who ever makes you feel comfortable. it's important to get your checkups every year so don't stop seeing your ob/gyn just because your not feeling right. it's really up to your comfort level if it's male or female.
good luck!

I don't care if the doc is male/female/gay or otherwise so long as they are good at what they do. I would rather have a very good male doc than a lousy female doc any day. My life has been in the hands of a lousy female doc and I could have died so give me a good doc regardless of sex any day.
