Pick up a book called "tattooing A to Z" I'm pretty sure you can download it online somewhere it's a very helpful book for beginners and goes over a lot of the basics of the anatomy of the machine and components as well as aftercare and techniques for lining and shading. You always want to make sure you have an autoclave and a steril work area this in my opinion is the number one priority. Avoid cheap machines from china or Japan. You get what you pay for with machines. Customs are good I suggest learning the anatomy of a machine and building one from the Frame up. Good coils and knowledge of armature bars and such is a must.

Besides being apprenticed and trained by another artist, you need to have the ability to draw, understand color and composition, be patient and have good people skills, and have a genuine desire to be tattooing people.
