As an avid fan of the women who own and run both the store in NYC and Seattle and can quote many friends on their wide selection and helpfulness when it comes to choosing toys I would say check out Toys in Babeland or www.babeland.com . Totally woman owned and woman centered, if you're the feminist your nickname suggests I think you'll find the website/store truly helpful.

For younger girls: Barbie, Stuffed animals, Polly Pocket, Baby dolls, Coloring books, etc.
For younger boys: Cars, Stuffed animals, Coloring books, Legos, Planes, Outdoor games, Soccer balls/footballs, etc.
