no, its not "popular"... people are just more comfortable "comming out" than they were a long time ago.

Young people see it as a way to shock and offend with a built in security - no one can really say or do anything to them for being "gay" because it would be a hate crime.
For those of us who are actually gay or bi its very annoying to see it become too much of a trend. There are so many girls that will kiss a girl just for the attention they get from men that it feels to me like it undermines the importance of people being able to own their sexuality without being stigmatized for it. Once it becomes a cliche it makes it that much harder for people living the lifestyle to make a positive impact or be taken seriously.

People are just coming out more, are more willing to accept themselves at younger ages than before.

There's not any more gay people, but with acceptance and tolerance it's become a lot easier to be accepted regardless of sexuality.

People have realized there's worse things in the world than being gay I suppose.

Yeah it does seem like everyone is doing it. I guess these days we just feel freer to come out. The up and coming generations particularly will have no qualms about doing it whereas the generations of even 20 years ago didn't really do it. So it's probably years and years of people trying to come out at once.

I don't think it's a popular thing. It's just that as more people come out others are going to figure that it's safe and okay for them to come out also.
And if anything does go wrong they'll have people to back them up.

I think it is because, while much of society is still bigoted and hateful, it has become much more acceptable than in years past. So the fear associated with coming out is not as strong as it used to be.

You've been too immersed in your own lifestyle to look beyond at the masses that are living heterosexual, straight lives.

No, everyone is not homosexual or inclined to act in accordance with those practices. Perhaps only the people in your circle are pretty much pretty.
