When you put salt on a paper napkin and then place a glass of something iced on top of it, it prevents the glass from sticking to the napkin after it begins sweating. My daughter began doing this whenever we went out to eat several years ago after a friend of hers told her about the technique.

oh yeah, he did that and the drink was sitting on a PAPER napkin

the salt helps the drink from sweating and then sticking to that napkin (so, like, if the person picks up the glass, that yucky, wet napkin won't come up off of the table too). :)

It will prevent the condensation on the glass from sticking to it and picking it up when someone picks up the glass. The salt absorbs enough water on the outside of the glass to discourage this.

It was probably to keep something dry, or to dry something off that was moist. Perhaps a bottle of white wine.
