Getting a government job?

I applied for a goverment job at the end of March. I am over qualifed for the job. I have not been called for an interview but the closing date is April 12th. Will they contact me after the closing date?

I applied for a public school secretary.

Usually, government jobs don't start calling for interviews til after the closing date. They'll wait til the job closes to review applications and then starting calling people in for interviews.
I work in state government and sometimes it might be several weeks before someone gets a call for an interview. Most people can't or don't wait that long, but some do.

If you are not notified for an interview, do not expect to hear anything from HR folks for the fed gov't. They are understaffed and receive 100's of applications for each posting. . Look at the job announcement, towards the end of the announcement should be a contact name/phone number. Wait until at least one week after the closing date, preferably 2 weeks. The federal gov't doesn't hire quickly

Also unless you have a veteran's preference, you may find it difficult to get hired in anything. But keep checking usajobs.gov - remember they do not keep your resume "on file", you'll need to go through the multi-page application each time for each separate position.

Maybe they didn't call you back because you hadn't passed the exam. Usually all government job require an entrance test and an interview. I would suggest to take some classes to be able to pass it.

Who did you apply with? Did you apply directly with the Government or a job placement service. The Gov will let you know.
