Well I happen to be the person Inoa is referring to, and as I said, Dell stopped using proprietary power supply connections in 2000. I asked Inoa to send me the model number of his computer that he claimed had a proprietary power supply so I could look it up, he did not respond.

There are sometimes issues with physically getting a new power supply to fit into the Dell case, not with connecting to the motherboard, but with physically inserting it in the case. These problems however can be quite easily overcome with very minor case modifications, that even a novice can complete. The E520 is not one of the cases affected by this problem, so you will have no trouble replacing the existing power supply with a new non-Dell one.

I would agree with the first 2 answers but today a top contributor of desktops told me the Dell's PSU's aren't proprietary since 2000, when I seen up to 2004 Dell models that show contrary.

Yes you can just find out what kind of (computer Case) you have and you are fine,
For a Example i have a AMD 64bit 3.2ghz in a standard (300w "ATX" case) i upgraded it to a 550w PSU just make sure the PSU is the right one for your case

If you want to find out what kind of case you got when you brought your computer contact Dell if that is the manufacture.

Hope i helped

Good luck! Dell has a unique way of configuring space in their systems. You will be lucky to find an aftermarket power supply that fits.

Yes. Make sure you get one with the same jack matching your Motherboards power socket.
