Before the keyboard system we use now, there was another system actually. In the past however, since people used typewriters, if they typed too fast, the keys would get stuck together. To fix this issue, the keyboard letters were rearranged so that a decent typing speed could be obtained but not fast enough for those letters to become jammed. We now use what they call "QWERTY".

I know some friends that do a lot of programming who learned the old way of typing (since we use computers now, there's no problem of keys getting stuck). They claim it makes things go faster...

The first layout followed the layout that was used in printer's boxes for typing setting before the typewriter was invented. The more common letters were near the middle of the box, the rarer letters at the edges.

Plus, the early typewriters had mechanical arms that had to go up and strike the ribbon to make a letter. It was found that if certain letters commonly used together (like the q and the u) were next to each other, then people would press the keys and the arms would hit each other and get stuck. So they were adjusted to move certain letters apart from each other.
