I have used Quicken and MS Money and found both to be inadequate. The best system out there is YNAB. Most personal finance bloggers are recommending it thesedays. I have purchased it myself. You might want to check it out at http://www.youneedabudget.com

I use Quicken.

Once you know it, it's okay, but I can assure you I wouldn't use it if my accountant didn't insist, so I can just email her my files at tax time. If it wasn't for that, I'd really rather run my business on Excel. It makes sense and does what it's told to do.

Basically, the program designers were idiots who thought that a program that assumed the users all understood Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and wanted to do "double entry accounting".

There's a lot of things the program would do that it simply CANNOT do that it WOULD do if they actually gave a damn about the non-accountant end user.

But to answer your question, have the person that's forcing you to use Quicken teach you. If no one is forcing you, get something else.

They offer it at your local community college.
