Soak it in vinegar for a couple days. It makes it rubbery.

We had to do this in high school. My lab parner and I bought a nerf ball, cut it to the middle, wrapped the egg in a baggie and shoved it into the ball, then packed it in a box with packing peanuts. We did OK, but didn't win.
However I do remember the winners. The teacher dropped the box from the ceiling of the gym, even kicked against the bleachers with all his might. He couldn't figure out what the wrapping inside the box was. Until my two friends started giggling and they said the wrappings were all sanitary napkins!!! You should have seen his face while holding all those Kotex!
So um, it works.
