My landlord mowed the lawn once a month in the winter and this spring he is mowing it every week. It seems the more he mows, the more weeds come up and the faster the lawn grows. Now he wants us to pay him to do it and said he must mow it twice a week in the summer. Any lawn/landscaping experts out there?? Is he mowing the lawn too much? I live at 98382...weather might be a factor. Thank you!

General rule of thumb, depending upon grass type is not really how often but to mow to keep the grass between 2/12-3/12 inches tall, never cutting more than a third of the overall blade at any one time,. So more often in the spring/summer when it's growing quickly and less often in the fall as growth slows.

How Often To Mow Lawn

Mowing Frequency

How often should a lawn be mowed? Mowing frequency should depend on the growth rate of the turfgrass plants, but it is often based on a service contract or when a convenient opportunity presents itself. The rate of turfgrass growth depends on the type of turfgrass (turfgrass species) present in the lawn, soil fertility (especially nitrogen), and weather or environmental conditions.

Another factor involved with mowing frequency is mowing height (see Table 1). A good rule of thumb is to mow your lawn regularly and to never remove or mow off more than one-third of the turfgrass height at any one mowing. For example, if you are maintaining your lawn at a mowing height of 2 inches, you should mow the lawn when or before the turfgrass reaches 3 inches in height. Also, by following this "one-third" rule of thumb, you will have fewer and smaller turfgrass clippings to deal with. If the turfgrass becomes too tall between mowings, raise the mowing height and then gradually reduce it until the recommended height is reached.

We mow ours every 3-4 weeks. We wait a long time for the first mow of the year so that the roots are well established after the snow. soo where you are...maybe weekly is fine depending how fast the grass/weeds grow. My lawn is now almost all white clover. It looks nice for a while then we must mow it so that we don't get stung by bees.

It wastes water to cut a lawn too short. You might check into how short he is cutting it.
it is often a matter of personal preference how often to mow. Twice a week sounds very excessive to me.
I don't think he can charge you unless you gave written consent at some point.

Now that would be different for different locales. Florida could go weeks when Pennsylvania needs it 7-10 days. If it looks unsightly, mow it !

I highly doubt he needs to mow twice a week... maybe once a week at most! If there are too many weeds, have him put down Weed 'n Feed, which helps grass grow and weeds die!

it depends on how much rain you get,but twice a week is to much, just tell your landlord that you will mow the lawn yourself that way you won't have to pay him

once a week in spring is all you need...and add weed killer granules to your grass on your own time, that way he only needs to mow it once a week, no more than that in spring and summer.
