You have standard plasterboard. It has a paper coating on the outsides and plaster between those paper layers. It is nailed onto vertical wall studs ("2x4s") that are spaced 16 inches apart.

You need to first get a knife or saw that is made for cutting plasterboard. Then stab it into the broken area and cut horizontally until you reach one of those vertical studs. Then turn it around and keep sawing horizontally in the opposite direction until you reach the other stud. Now start sawing up along a stud till you reach the top of the damage and then go across to the other stud. Now do that at the bottom of the damage until you have taken out all of the broken area. If you run into any obstacles like wires or pipes cut slowly and carefully to not damage them.

Now you need to go back to near the studs and use the knife or saw to cut off an inch of the plasterboard that is over the studs on both sides. That will give you an edge you can attach the new piece of plasterboard to.

Now measure the area you have opened up. Go back to the store and get a piece of plasterboard that size (you might have to buy a 4' x 8' piece unless they will sell you less). Also buy the nails that they recommend for nailing it on. Ask them how to trim a piece to the size you measured (scratching a line through the paper with the knife and snapping the piece off). Also get a can of premixed plasterboard cement and a spatula for smearing it on and some sandpaper for taking off the edges.

Fit the trimmed piece into the opening and put nails 6" apart along those studs. It would be nice to also have some supports along the wall in between the studs but we are going for easy not elegant. After the piece is nailed on use the spatula to fill around the edges. Do multiple layers to build it up. When it hardens add another layer. If it is sticking up too high at the edges then sandpaper them down. Try to get the edges to look level with the existing wall.

Now go to the store with a piece of the old broken wall and tell them you want to buy a can of paint and a brush to match that color wall. Put down papers to protect the floor and smear on paint. Put on two coats to be sure.

It won't look great but it won't look broken either.

Well, if its drywall, (a chalky substance that crumbles when squeezed, with paper between it) there are several ways. Depending on the size of the hole, you may have to get a "patch" where you buy or find a small chunk of drywall to fill the hole. For steps on how to mud it in, go down to your local Home Depot. Sometimes they have classes on how to do this type of stuff.

No offense sweetheart, but by the time you buy all of the stuff that you need to do this repair, & attempt to do it yourself when you refer to drywall as a thingy, call a professional, believe it or not it'll be cheaper!!
Sheetrock work is an art, not to be done by a novice.
Sorry, but if you do'nt have a clue on the first thing, you'll NEVER pull it off.
Get a punching bag sweetheart.

your wall is more than likely 1/2 inch drywall you need to go to like home depot and buy a sheet of drywall and cut your hole out into a square and cut your sheet out that you bought to fit tightly into the square and you'll need to ales buy some drywall mudd buy a 45 it's called 45 because it dries in 45 min so you can sand it . need to sand smooth so it seems to be seem less may require several coats. of mudd to blend it in and then paint it.you'll also need a putty knife to spread it on to the wall any other questions whom ever is working at home depot will be able to guide you step by step. hopefully I've learned something from this.
