Depends on what type of business. I once started with only 12k, and when I left over a dispute with my partners, we had 100 mil in the bank, only 4 years later. A company that sells products might take a bit more, depending on your target market and inventory required to keep up with them. Draw up a business plan, you can get templates for them at Microsoft.com and other sites online. Then take it to a CPA for review. Then you might get a clearer picture before you begin, and even avoid mistakes.

not much if you invest in the stock market with only $ 5,000 over time your amount will increase to the point where you can buy a smaller stock and build your company off of it.be sure to invest in a reliable stock.and be prepared to see some disappointment

it's terribly frustrating to run a large company of manufactured goods... you need well over $500,000 to even think about it with the marketing, machinery, employees, cost of materials, etc...
but if you were a manufacturer of cakes in a small city block, i'd imagine it's somewhere around $10,000 to start.
