The egg smell is indeed caused by sulfur dioxide and is not good for fish in high amounts. You can let the water set out for a day before you need it and even run an air stone in it to drive off the sulfur gas and make it much more acceptable for tank use. I would suggest you use carbon in your filter and change it at each water change to help remove the sulfur. Once that's done it should be safe for your fish.

If you are setting up a freshwater tank, you should use tap water with dechlorinator. If you are setting up a saltwater tank, you should use RO/DI water from the supermarket (and salt mix of course). The egg smell of your well water is most likely due to the sulfur deposits underground. You should never use water with sulfur in it to set up any aquarium because it can have very bad effects on fish/plant/whatever you're putting in it.

Definatly not. If you want to use water for your tank and you cant find anything around your house thats decent, buy it from the fish store. Your water is mostly likely high in sulfer like the other guy said. Try boiling your water and buying water toners to remove all the harmfull stuff but this can be expensive, the best way is to get water from your sink that is clean and just put dechlorinator in it.

I would say no because the "weird egg smell" means that there is Sulfur in your water which can be very harmful for your fish. I would buy distilled water and put it in the tank and let it get to room temperature before putting fish in it. If you use tap water put detoxifyer in it to get rid of the chlorine and any other chemicals and let that sit for 24 hours and then put fish it in.

It depends on the kind of aquarium it is, different kinds of fish require different kinds of water.

That probably means it is high in sulfur. I would not use it for fish. After all, what is a brief, unpleasant smell for you when you turn on the tap would be what they are living in, breathing, etc. Not nice.

i dont recommend using well water at all!! well water has iron in it and if you look under a micoscope. there is VERY small metal peices in it. it gets in the lungs of the fish and cuts them. if you are going to use well water there is a chemical you get at any pet store that helps with that. if you have a friend that has city water. save gallon jugs and get there water.

Think of it this way:
Would you drink it? If not, it's probably not suitable to make a fish live in.
