It sees the reflection of the background, behind itself. The sky usually.
At least the first time it hit. After that, it probably had a concussion and became a 'dumb' bird.

Omens have to either 'presage' or 'post-figure' an event to which it can be attributed to. In other words, a bird trying to get into your room by itself doesn't mean anything.
However, if you noticed a bird trying to get into your room, constantly bumping its head against your window, and you find out later your best friend was trying to get a hold of you at about the same time, then you can say it's more likely to be an omen.
Birds are considered messengers in most omen-mythologies. The type of bird, and the type of mythology, usually dictate the 'meaning' of the omen. Some mythologies, ravens mean death, while others, ravens mean knowledge or success in 'battle' or a struggle. It also helps if any people you know are associated with the type of bird banging its head against your window. If someone you know really likes hawks, seeing a hawk perched unexpectedly outside your window, while your friend is away, could mean they are thinking of you.
Very few things in life are satisfied by 'general' answers. The details determine the outcome.

There is this red bird banging into my window every few seconds and he does it light or dark, he's doing it now and it's almost 3 am. I can hear it from other rooms in the house, it is that loud. He's been doing it for a couple weeks now. Last year it was a little brown bird, wren, I guess, that did it higher up on a window. He did it for weeks, as well. I don't know what to do or why he is doing it. It would seem his bill/beak would be hurting him by now. It really is loud and getting to be annoying. Any suggestions appreciated.

I think what your friend was meaning was the belief that if you have crows or blackbirds on your house or in your trees that it means a death in the family is near.
Native Americans on the North-west coast (some of them) believed that owls could predict a person's death (ex: When the owl called your name).
Years ago a bird would follow my mother around the house from window to window pecking on the glass lightly. It was a few months after my grandfather died and it was his favorite bird. I've also heard stories where people believe that the souls of their dead ancestors come back in the form of birds. Beliefs in things like that can be traced to Native Amercians (I can't recall which culture group) and even to some groups in Papa New Guinee.
I hope that that's of some use,
Cheers,

Might be a retarded bird. I had one at a house I worked at (group home for people with disabilities, no less) that without fail flew into the window eeeevery morning when I opened the blinds.
Birds often mean death. But they are big fat black ones.

Oh My God! I've seen a bird do this that one time in the park and the park ranger contacted authorities immediatly. People were scared it might be infected with the bird flu. Try to stay away from it untill a vet examins it. Of course in the park the bird wasn't hitting a wall, it was hitting a tree.

If you have another window on another wall in the same area the bird can see right through it and thinks that nothing is there but air.

It's means birds are not so bright, and some are even dumber...all species have their idiots.
Some birds will either try to get through it because they can't see the glass, and others will actually try to attack their own reflection.

Yup, it's a combination of a super-dumb bird and a super-clean window!
