Got to be the Smiths really, would say the Stone Roses, but you could say they were more of a 90's band.
Anyway, let's save the Smiths, because of the amazing lyrics Morrissey; often quite wryly funny and the genius of Johnny Marr at finding musical to accompany the words so well, sometimes powerful, at other times delicate, it still stands the test of time.
Part of me wants to say Duran Duran mind you as they were my fave band at the time, teeny bopper that i was back then!

It would have to be the Smiths.they defined the 80's & wrote some of the best songs, i mean really good songs without any arty videos shot in Antigua or whatever.I defy anyone to listen to "There is a light that never goes out" or "I know it's over" & not be moved.
It was my older sister who got married & left me her Smiths collection - i was around 6/7 during their heyday that got me into them.Brilliant brilliant brilliant.

AHA. This probably means I had a crush on Morten Harkett. I think he's a brilliant singer and I am just very into that kind of mood music. The Blood That Moves The Body is probably my favourite song by them.

I was about to post my answer but azza got there first: The Smiths, for certain. The collaboration of Johnny Marr and Morrissey was one of the finest in music's history, as far as I'm concerned.

The Jam cause Paul Weller is one of the best songwriter/singers in England. His career has spanned 30 years and has charted in all but one of them.

The Smiths, using a 'Rubber Ring'...need you even ask why?
I would put weights on the shoes of all members of Duran Duran so that they would drown faster.

The Smiths.
Listen to The Queen Is Dead and tell me it isnt just pure lyrical genius. Stuff like:
"So I broke into the palace with a sponge and a rusty spanner, she said I know you and you cannot sing, I said that's nothing you should hear me play piano....."
OR
"I want to live, I want to love, I want to catch something that I might be ashamed of...."
Joy Division would come a close second, but they broke up in 1980, so I wont count them.
