Depends on who's asking. If it's someone you're dating, then you should answer them honestly.

If the question comes up in a casual social situation, and you're uncomfortable revealing the number, simply make a joke out of it, "Why do you want to know? Wanna get married?" and laugh.

Usually, a civilized person with an ounce of manners will understand immediately that he/she's treading on uncomfortable conversational territory for you and will laugh along with you and change the subject.

Ask a question with a question.... When you get the "How many times have you been married" ask this: Is marriage something you are interested in? If they say no, then ask them to explain to you in their own words what the word, "commitment" means.

You either tell them the number of times of if you don't want to simply say "I would rather not share that information" or even tell them it's none of their beez wax! It isn't anyones business.

I read this in one of those emails "Lifes Rules"....if someone asks you a question and you do not feel it's it is their business, respond with "why do you ask?". If that is not comfortable, and this is not your first marriage just say "this is not my first marriage".

You are not obliged to answer anyone's questions if you do not want to. You have a right to privacy and a right to share information at your own pace.
