I went through a stage like that. It was because of my friends, they weren't the best influences on me. Eventually I matured and got new friends and now my grades are pretty much straight A's. You just have to set a goal and work towards it.

Typical teen. I am 13 as well i struggled with school myself my parents had a talk with me that was very powerful. They told me that if i don't get my head out of the clouds, I'll end up grounded. wulaa, i am a strait a student. or have a parent teacher conference. those work nicely. there are boys in my class who act the same way (i cant stand 'em) anyway, just tell him to pull things together, or there will be serious punishment. find his prized possession like a cellphone, laptop, psp etc and threaten 2 take it away. Good luck.

I'm 12, I think if you showed your son that it may be fun to slack in school now, that fun stays with him for a few years. The grades stay with him for the rest of his life. His grades now, affect how he does in high school, therefore what college he gets into. Make it his descion, let him decide whether to be a fry cook or a doctor. Life in a rundown apartment or a in the suburb. Show him the chain reaction. Thats been my main motivation for school. Also, let him find a career that he wants to have. Thats another motivation for me(wanting to be a doctor).

Lol a stick of dynamite! Thirteen they are just becoming teenagers and seem to need a lot of motivation. Try taking away a favorite item(game boy) or even ground. Be quick to reward with words also. Not to worry he'll grow into a fine young man that will have you bursting with pride.

I think this is totally normal for your son, i think you should praise your son for his academic sucess, but dont overly encourage him, just tell him your proud of his grade and that he obviously has potential in math class. He may not like his teachers, but that probably wont change because his teachers probably dont praise him because of his bad behaviour, that is a possible problem but praising is still a great motive for anyone, even coming from parents! :)

you can motivate your 13 year old but encourageing him to do his work and praiseing him when he does all kids want is a little respect and attention. if he feels hes not getting enough attention he might be doing it on purpose just to get some. when he does bad punish him but when he does good give him a huge reward wich will make him want to do better more often.

Im a 13 year old, and i would be motivated if my parents told me they would get me and xbox 360 or a ps3 if i got all A's try that or maybe something else he likes. If he doesnt have a cell phone try that, or maybe take him to a basket/foot/base ball game.

tell him if he wants to get a good job it all starts in high school.
or have him hold a cardboard sign out on a busy street corner saying
"my parents wanted me to see what my future would be like if i dont keep my grades up in school"
or something along the lines of that

POSITIVE ATTENTION, and lots of it. Always remind him of the good decisions he is making in his own life no matter how small they seem to you, reinforce the positive aspects of who he is relentlessly, and allow him to push a few limits for himself, use you judgement as a parent as to when it's time for you to really step in and force some adjustments on his own decesion making. Keep your eyes open ,trust him , and trust yourself. You'll know when it's time to (help).
