I don't remember, but I apparently had to wear an oven mitt on my left hand so I wouldn't reach with it when I was with my one aunt. (In Italian, the word for left is "sinistre" hmmm)

*Lucky* for my folks, I'm right-handed today.

Anyone have a story of forced right-handedness? Did it work? Why was it done? Are you guilty of this?

Neither do I! I think it's horrible. I must not have been a lefty, because I'm ok. Students I work with have developed letter recognition problems because of it.

I want to hear stories about people that had this happen and how they feel about it. I also want to know if it's still being done.

I'm a lefty. They tried to make me change but I was so much a lefty at such an early age they didn't try very hard. Still, the teachers always gave me bad grades in penmanship no matter how hard I tried. It's a right-handed world, for sure, but in some people handedness is something you just can't change.

Well my dad is left handed and my mom is right. My dad was out to sea since he was in the military so he couldn't help my brother write, it had to be my mom. They both noticed he would draw with his left hand but my mom could only teach him with his right. He became kind of ambidextrous doing other things, but he can only write with his right hand!

But I have heard leftys have a higher rate of dying? Because most things are made for rightys. And I don't know that's weird, that's probably why teachers kept kids from being leftys.

I am left handed and hate the fact that the world is designed for right handed people.......ANYWAY! I had a teacher who was born a lefty but his parents forced him to be a righty. He could write with both hands but you couldn't read his writing very well. If a person is born a lefty then the parents should just leave it alone!

My son's teacher recommended it but I told her I'd been a lefty all my life and am fine. I passed on allowing it. Mother Nature knows what she's doing.

My baton teacher when I was a kid did make me learn to twirl with my right hand because it didn't look good in the routine for me to twirl backwards from the rest. I still twirl right handed.

my kindergarten teacher did not want me to be left handed. she would put everything in my right hand and she didn't want me to go to first grade because of it. i still write with my left hand, but i can only use scissors with my right hand because of her. she was a witch.
