ohio is a 'helmets optional' state to those that have the endorsement for a year or more, pa is the same after 2 years. legally, i could now ride without a helmet if i so choose, but just like seat belts, if the time comes that i need it, i wont have time to get it off the sissy bar on the way down. and if u stop and think about it, there's a s-hitload of things that could take u down in a heartbeat...not just grandma's buick. ever have a june bug smack u in the head at 55? those dam things HURT.

You should always wear a helmet. You can never completely trust a horse, no matter how well trained they are or how long you've owned/ridden them. They are animals and are totally unpredictable. I've had my horse for over a year, and he never spooks or does anything to hurt me, and I can honestly say I trust him, however, I still ride with a helmet, even if I'm just walking him around. A friend of mine had a bad fall not to long ago where she was jumping, and the horse spooked. She fell off and ended up underneath her horse. Then her horse kicked her in the head. Thank God, she was wearing her helmet. Her helmet cracked in half though. If she hadnt been wearing a helmet she would not have lived, and her horse is not one to spook. So if you ask me, better safe than sorry, or dead.

I'm a huge believer in everyone's right to be as silly as they want to be. If you want to ride without a helmet - go nuts! But, the likelihood of injury is just so high, I never, ever ride with anything less than my full-face helmet, which has paid for itself many times over.
I have seen many instances where helmets have saved people from serious injury from something that is very slight (myself, taking a large piece of gravel in the middle of the face-shield, for instance, while doing about 75mph). In that instance, had I not being wearing a helmet, I really believe I would have (a) suffered a serious injury to my face and (b) probably gone down on the bike due to the injury/shock of being hit.
The punch line - I am not a fan of legislation to try to make us "safe." No matter what state I live in - I'll be wearing a helmet, and I think you will find that most riders feel the same.

Boy did you open a can of old worms. This debate has been going on for decades. The are plenty of statistics to support either side. Yes, in certain instances helmets can do more harm then good. Look it up. That said, I beleive in personal freedom. My wearing a helmet or not does not affect others on the road the way cell phones, putting on makeup, reading the paper, eating a big Mac...does. How many freedoms do you want to let the government take away before they get to the ones that affect you directly. Then it will be too late because no one will care.

If helmets are such a good idea why not a helmet law for cars? After all, race car drivers wear them right? How about slipping in the shower? Lets make a shower helmet law. As a matter of fact how about mandatory helmets at all times. If you are not willing to have a helmet forced onto your head while you drive a car then shut up and get off my back !!!

helmets save lives. period. while I am a big advocate for not wanting the government sticking its nose in my business I know that a helmet can make the diference between being alive or dead. I feel this is no different than the seat belt laws that are out there for cars. it simply saves lives. even if a law such as this only saved one life it would be worth it.

The debate about helmets will continue whether there is a law or not. The real issue for me is NOT the helmet, the issue is others passing a law that requires me to do something THEY decided was best for me. Would you support a law that said EVERYONE must wear shoes? (no open toes) You might stub your toe or cut your foot. You might get hurt, it's for your safety, my insurance.......................
We are not talking about the privilege of operating a motorcycle on the roadway. We are talking about my right to choose what I wear, and for what reason.
Fight for your rights or lose them. This is as good a place to start as any. This country is headed downhill fast, how many laws were written and passed recently that you don't know about yet? They will affect you (or your children).
Baron, my friend, I disagree totally. The traffic laws exist, that does not mean they are followed. The examples you cite are the ones that are killing us. What cage does 65? And Stop signs? They are the biggest reasons to wear a helmet.

I believe in helmets and seat belts for children. However I feel that making them a law is an infringement upon my personal rights. I am a open minded intelligent adult and am capable of making decisions about my life and do not need the government telling me what to do.
By the way I do wear a helmet most of the time, however I no longer wear a seat belt.

NO> Traffic law is the purview of the State , not the Feds. Big Brother already has totaltiarian powers. I say we shouldn't give not one iota of power to any govt.
I surprised and dismayed at you people who willingly give up your freedom.
I wear a helmet every time I ride because I choose to. I'm anti-helmet law.
