it seemed that every time someone geeky asked me to dance when i was in HS, the song freebird was playing. to me that was the longest song ever and it length was.... eternity

I know that "Echoes", off of Meddle by Pink Floyd is about 23:30
And 2112 by Rush is 20:31. Pretty long.
Apparently the longest song EVER though, is from a group called Devil Doll. The song is "The Sacrilege of Fatal Arms" and it's 79:05 long.

Not sure if it's the longest but the original version of (Not Just) Knee Deep by Parliament is over 15 mins long

Manowar did a song (have since forgotten the title) that was 28 mins long. Actually the reason I forgot the title is that it's almost as long as the song. A friend of mine in college actually used to put this on his radio show, then go out to watch the first half of Star Trek(I'm not kidding).

My guess would be "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd. Parts 1-9 end up being almost 40 minutes long. The Floyd made a lot of long songs though

I just listened to The Mars Volta's latest album "Frances the Mute" and the last song on that album, "Cassandra Gemini" is 32 mins and 23 seconds of music the entire time. I was impressed because it kept me occupied and interested the whole time without skipping a beat.

One of the best long songs ever is In A Gadda Da Vida by Iron Butterfly its almost 18 minutes long. Took up one whole side of a vinyl record lol.

I am sure there are some symphonies that are very long. NOFX has a song - the decline which is like 23 minutes long. there are a bunch of jam bands like the greatful dead or phish that have songs over 20mins too.

Fates Warning has a "song" that spans an entire tape side. It's called "The Ivory Gate of Dreams". It is an assembly of several songs combined into one. I don't know the length...maybe 25 minutes?
