I bought my laptop about a year ago for $1000 out of my own money, it means alot to me because I bought it myself. I'm only 19 and I'm still in school. I keep up with defragmenting all the scans and everything on my computer. but I installed AutoCad 2007 to it about a month ago and then it started to get really slow, well today I cut it on not to use AutoCad but then it just blacked out saying something about I need to check for updates for RAM and that I need to restart my computer and all kinds of things. I'm going to buy a 1GB RAM chip for it soon as I can but I can't afford a $170 chip just out of no where right now its only but 512. I just want to make sure its not some softhwear malfunction thats messing it up or anything.

Autocad is a pretty powerful program. You may get by with 512 RAM if you do everything possible to keep your RAM free.

--set wallpaper and screensaver to blank and/or none.
--cleanup startup menu - load only that you absolutely need on a daily basis
--run a Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, and defrag regularly
--From Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options:
Delete cookies
delete offline files
clear history
set days to store history to 0

see if this helps

You have software messing up. Windows tends to act like a dog with to many things installed no matter how much ram.

Most common mistake on the windows system is people install too many bits of software that changes how the system works or freeware that scans system. After a few months of this type of random installing a windows system is junk.

Them toshiba also tend to get the cpu cooling system pluged and the overheat. If you fans start making a different sound its time to have the dust cleaned out from that area.

See if you can roll back the system to a date in the past
