In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus faces a series of challenges during his wanderings from
which he relies on assistance from others to guide him. He obtains a potion from Hermes
that protects him from the magical wand of the goddess Circe, a wand that had turned
several members of his crew into swine. Odysseus then befriends Circe who reverses her
spell and instructs him to place balls of wax into his crew members ears so that when
they leave her domain and sail past the Island of the Sirens, they will not be lured to their
demise through the Sirens hypnotic songs.

he is responsible for their lives and has to protect them as well as himself, and they don't always obey him, like when they opened the bag which let all the wild winds free and when the killed the cattle of the Sun despite Odysseus warning them not to.
