Alcatraz has been used as a prison since the late 1870's, first for soldiers who had broken the law.

From 1930-50 Alcatraz was home to the worst criminals. Al Capone was there for a while, Richard Stroud [a sociopath in the truest sense of the word] gained renown as the "Birdman of Alcatraz" even after killing a guard in order to stay in prison. He got along better with his birds.

The prison closed in the early 1960's the buildings old and decaying, it was expensive to maintain a population on the Island every thing, including drinking water had to brought to the island.

In the 1970's the a Native American group attempted to reclaim the land after the government was done with it as promised in treaties. They didn't last long either.

The island is now part of the biggest urban national park.

I think I saw a very interesting show on discovery channel. From what I've seen about it from the "escape' films they are always doing and the program I saw, it was built as a maximum security prison to house the worst criminals around the 40's or 50s and for a while it worked great. But they were sloppy when they built it. so with the salty sea air and the waves constantly coming in the water/plumbing pipes are now eroded and the foundation in the cells is crumbling. And because they put so many prisoners to death they say it's a very eerie feeling being there, even in the afternoon when it's sunny. Surely You can look up more info someplace as part of California history, Google it perhaps. Now, they run it as a part of the state Parks & forestry service?? Well, someone runs the tours anyway even if it isn't that department. tens of thousands they say visit there every year, but personally I would not go. I think they say only two people ever made it out of the prison and soon after drowned in the ocean.
Sorry i can't tell you names or good websites.

it's been a long time since i've been there but i went as a little kid with my family and i have to say, once you get there, you forget the storied. alcatraz has got to be the coolest place ever. they give you a little headset to wear and you enter numbers and and it tells you a little bit about the place you're standing. be careful though, i got left there and my parents had to come back and get me. i wandered away from them. just make sure you get back to the boat on time but enjoy. be careful in the city though, lots of druggies but they are like bees- you leave them alone and they will leave you alone!

Not alot have escaped from there. They have only had like four people and three of them died. My dad there once for a sevice call, and he said that one of the people there took one of his screw drivers and put it threw him. You should take the ferry past it. It's actally pretty cool.
