Does it clatter? Chances are you don't have enough revs when changing gear or letting the clutch pedal up.

Basically with the clutch pedal down you have released the clutch from the flywheel and no "drive" happens, when you release the clutch pedal the clutch moves to touch and grab the flywheel thus connecting the transmission with the engine and giving you "drive"

A good way to start is to be on a completely flat surface with nothing around you. Start the car out of gear and with the handbrake (e-brake for you yankees ;)) off, the surface should be flat so you don't roll. Now push the clutch pedal to the floor and shift into first. Now very very slowly lift the clutch pedal and you should feel a point where you feel the clutch "bite" and then slowly keep letting the clutch out till the car rolls.

Then to stop the car push the clutch pedal down and press the brake with the right foot.

To practice this till you can do it without stalling the car, then practice pressing the accellerator slightly when just when you feel the "bite" and proceed to accelerate more as you let the clutch completely off. It should be a smooth motion.

Have someone drive you to an empty parking lot to practice. Every clutch is different so try to practice with the same car until you get the hang of it. Put the car in first and very slowly let it out until you feel the car start to move. Now you need to apply the gas pedal (not too much though). As you give the car more gas you can very slowly release the clutch. If you pay attention to the car you will know when to give it gas. You'll know if you let the clutch out too fast or if you give it too much gas because it will lurch forward. It takes a while to catch on but once you get the hang of it, it's easy. First gear is the hardest. Once you are moving and out of first, if it still makes a funny noise of sputters you are either not giving it enough gas or you need to downshift.... Good luck and have fun.

With the vehicle stopped on a reasonably level surface. Put the manual transmission in first gear. Keep your foot off of the brake (because the car isn't rolling). Without giving the vehicle any gas on the acceleration pedal just work the clutch only and let out on the clutch pedal out slowly.
Just ease the clutch pedal out and get the feel of the car pulling as it wants to move. Most vehicles will take off on their own power if you are easy enough without any acceleration of the gas pedal.
Push back in on the clutch and stop the vehicle with the brake, now do it over and over then do it on different surfaces (not inclines but surfaces like dirt, pavement, gravel ) you will eventually get bored because you are getting acquainted with the feel of the clutch, and then when you feel the clutch pulling you will get the gas pedal in harmony doing it the same way working in harmony. When you get frustrated go back to this beginning basic move, it will restore confidence that you can do it.

too much clutch and not enough gas. A good way to get started, is to press the gas until the engine is running fairly fast, then slowly and I repeat slowly, release the clutch, just keep slowly, letting out on it. don't make any jerking motion, you will see how the clutch engages, and when it takes hold and takes off. Now practice and practice, until you get the feel of it. good luck

Imagine there's a dog on a treadmill under the bonnet, the clutch tells it to run and the accelerator (gas pedal) decides how much air you let it breath.

If you want it to run hard enough to move the car, then you have to give it enough air to breath whilst doing so. If you don't, it will just sit on it's backside and tell you to piss off.

Before I learned how to drive a manual, I read a really great description online that explained perfectly how it should be done. It isn't the same site, but close to it, so you can try going http://www.ehow.com/how_3234_drive-car-with.html and reading what they suggest. For some people, it's just better to read in full detail what they are expected to do before they are faced with the actual problem.

just remember this: your engine is always spinning when its running. when you push the clutch in or the lever is in neutral, the engine is spinning by itself. when you let the clutch out (in gear) you are attaching the tires to the spinning engine to make the car go. so if it starts to die, just push the clutch in real fast and start over. youll be ok. you just need practice by yourself.

let out the clutch slowly as you push on the gas.

I would recommend finding someone who knows how to drive one though and having them show you how to do it.
