tampons (plastic-not cardboard tubing) because it's less uncomfortable and you don't have to worry about leaking for hours. Also, you can wear a thinner pad with it and not worry about having a bulge in your pants. I get kinda creeped out about wearing a tampon all night though..just because of the time period and TSS.

IMHO, pads are nasty. They're messy, bulky, and uncomfortable. Tampons, on the other hand keep everything...contained. I don't generally sleep for more than 6 hours a night so I'll sleep with a tampon most of the time. After my period and a day or so before I'm expecting it, I'll just wear a pantyliner.
I've also found that I'm able to be far more active when I'm wearing tampons. I can swim, I can go rock climbing (important since it's my summer job XD)...I can go about all my usual activites without being affected. Plus I can fool around without it being entirely disgusting ;)
As for brands and such, I'll usually go with Tampax Pearl. I prefer it to the cardboard applicator because I can keep it in my bag without it being bent up and it's smaller. I use Always brand pantyliners.
I'm not too concerned about TSS because I change them every 4 hours and the FDA reccomends 4-8 hours.

I only use OB tampons. Who wants to walk around feeling like they are wearing a diaper all day? Not me! There is no smell with tampons...and no matter how often you change your pad, there is a smell. Its a chemical reaction when the blood hits the air. Tampons are cleaner. There is a small risk of Toxic Shock...but that risk is minimal if you use the right absorbancy tampon and change them every 4-6 hours.

I prefer pads even though I have tried tampons in the past. With tampons I found that they could be very messy if I didn't change them about every 3 hours.
I no longer use tampons due to medical reasons unrelated to the tampon itself.
When it comes to pads I use Always and I like them the best. To find out more about their product line check out: http://www.always.com
As for the messiness that can occur with pads, there are a variety of product lines that will take care of each kind of period. Also, by changing them about every 3 hours (yep, just like with tampons) you cut down the amount of mess.

I prefer both because sometimes you want both. For example, some people make "messes" when they sleep and prefer tampons. Others might NOT at night becaue you shoujdl not leave them in for that long! If you have a REALLY LONG day ahead of you and NO time to change, then wear a tampon and pad. when your tampon fills up, take it out and then you've got a pad! I love pantiliners!

Tampons.
The idea of having my period blood touching my outer lips is disgusting. Plus, theyre flushable and they arent bulky and can be worn in the pool. What if Im on my period and my husband reaches down to rub the area? If its a string, he's not going to feel it. Pads, IMO are just nasty.
Panty liners are okay if Im spotting only. And I usually wear a liner to bed and change it once or twice.

With pads, there's no risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome as there would be with tampons. But, you can wear tampons when you're in water.

Both. If you entirely depend on tampons, you could get TSS. (Toxic Shock Syndrome) Try both. I usually wear pads overnight to keep from wearing them longer than they ought to be.

pads, cuz you can't be as active w/tampons. plus, you could get that disease they talk about, terminal shock syndrome, or something like that.
