When I was a kid growing up in Illinois I used to see these things come up out of the ground. I called them lobsters. Nobody EVER believed me and said I was nuts. Now I'm an adult living in Kentucky and my son showed me these things he found out by the garage. They must have been the things I used to see when I was a kid. WHAT ARE THEY? I know they're not lobsters, I live in Kentucky! not anywhere near any water either.

Crayfish sometimes travel in the underground water table and so emerge in unexpected places. You are close enough to some body of fresh water.

crawfish they are! and underground they can live.

Crayfish, often referred to as crawfish or crawdad, are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters, to which they are closely related. They are found in bodies of fresh water that do not freeze to the bottom, and which have shelter against predators. Most crayfish cannot tolerate polluted water, although some species such as the invasive Procambarus clarkii are more hardy. Some crayfish have been found living as much as 3 m (10 feet) underground.

You must have an outlet to a fairly pure water source near you (think water spring). Congrats, with the right boil, these are fairly good, but small in portion, eating!

These are crayfish or what we in the South call crawdads. How they get into your garage is unclear to me, being you live no where near water. Question. Are they alive when you find them or are they just the shells. If they are dried up shells, then maybe they were left there by a previous owner of the house. If they are alive, then best of luck clearing up this mystery. In rare cases, freak storms have dropped fish and frogs in the middle of places that are not around water. Just a brain thought. The underground water table from the answer above sounds logical too.

I'm thinking crawdaddies too, but they're nowhere near water, so that makes me say, no, not crawdaddies...

If you don't get any answers from here, consider starting some sort of dialogue with a local college, like their science department, etc. They might have some answers for you.

heh, they're smilies. :) - the epitome of a smiley. it rather is, in reality, merely a smiley. :@ - offended. in case you apply it to msn, it turns into an offended face. :0 - marvel, marvel. :C - unhappy smiley. in case you tilt your head sideways, you will discover how they become faces.
