I turn mine off at night. During the day, when not in use, I turn off the monitor. Read the article below:
Leave PC on or Turn it Off
http://www.teamits.com/connection/qa/turnoffpc.html
This is a point of contention among computer users worldwide. Most recommend minimizing the number of times any electronic device is powered off and on, to lengthen the life of both electrical components such as the CPU, and mechanical components such as fans and hard drives. You never want to repeatedly turn your PC off and on during the day; instead just leave it on all day long. Therefore the only question is whether to turn the computer off at night.
Justification exists for both sides. PCs that are left on overnight can be backed up automatically, but turning off the PC saves power and creates less heat. We generally recommend a middle position, and tell users to turn off their monitor at night but leave the PC running. This approach allows network connections to stay up as well. Of course, any running programs should be closed every night to prevent data loss in case of a power failure. Today's "green" PCs have power saving built in, which allows PCs to enter sleep mode at night, yet still wake up in time to be backed up.

Yes! It has this really loud, really annoying humming sound that it makes, and I end up either going to sleep at 2 or something, or waking up around 4 because of it! However, that might just have something to do with the fact that my computer's 4 years old!
But yeah--I do turn it off.

As with the computers I work with in my field, my personal machines run 24/7/365, with only monitor hibernation on!
Consider that turning electronic devices on and off ultimately kills them due to the constant heat up (expansion) cool down (contraction) of the components, running at operating temperature gives the longest life span other then leaving it permanently off!
There are computer systems (embedded in other systems) in the telecommunications/cable/IT industry that have literally been running non stop for 25 years!

Yes, and honestly it is a good idea to do so every day if you can. Otherwise your computer will 1. be working harder than it needs to which will wear down your battery (if laptop) or internal power supply (if desktop) 2. your comp. will heat up much more often than it should which can cause failure to many parts including: fan, lcd screen (if laptop) monitor (if desktop) mouse (if wireless) and others. so all around you should turn it off once every 2 days or less if possible! I hope this helps you! :)

For desktop pc better performance, I suggest you set your desktop background/wallpaper and screensaver to "none", then right click on desktop, click properties, click 'appearance', choose ' windows classic style'.
Then Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/display properties/screensaver/monitor power/power schemes/settings/turn off monitor after 10 minutes, and set the next 2 drop down boxes ( 1. Turn off Hard Disks, and 2. System Standby) to "never"/apply/ok/ok.
Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Advanced tab /under Performance click on Settings / Visual Effects tab/
Adjust for best performance / Ok / Apply / Ok
Then Start/Control Panel/Display/display properties/screensaver/monitor power/hibernate/take check mark out of "Enable hibernation"/apply/ok/ok. Do not to use hibernate on desktop. Standby & Hibernate Issues in Windows XP = http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_standby.htm

If I'm going to be away from the pc for more than an hour, or whenever there is lightning in the area, then after shutting it down properly, I unplug the UPS (which all the computer stuff is plugged into) and disconnect the cable.

The mission is Vista. you need to favor to reinforce to WindowsXP. ok, heavily, in the previous than you assume it rather is a hardware challenge, try installation some common version of Linux. i like to recommend PCLOS. If it installs and effective factors, you word of you're transforming into were given Vista complications, no longer hardware complications. attempt first, purchase later.

Yes (both of them); good to let them cool off. Poor little peeyuunee laptop fans are notorious for failing as I found out this past summer when one did and I had to rebuild a laptop (grrr)
