They didn't. The civil war in the mid-17th century was largely driven by religious differences between the Stuart kings and the puritans. Earlier, following the death of Henry VIII, there were severe upheavals as his three children succeeded him, one after the other and the country went from anglican to catholic to anglican again in less than 15 years.

Its mainly due to English people in general becoming less religious, a lot of Engish people say they are christian, but this basically means they believe in God, most rarely attend church or read the bible, and closest they come to praying is saying to themselves "thank you God" when something really good happens in their life.
These days ultra religios people are seen as behind the times and primitive, for example most people would say they felt sorry for muslim women for having to cover thyemselves up, even if muslim women are happy to do this, people will still asume they hare constrained. And at the end of the day you cant hate or be thretend by somthing you feel sorry for and see as primitive.

England did not escape them. Henry VIII took over the Church of England from the Pope after his divorce from Katherine of Aragon in the early 1500's. Thereafter, England lurched from protestant to catholic over the next 100 years. "Bloody Mary," daughter of Katherine, ruled after him. After protestant Elizabeth I, daughter of Anne Boleyne, came the Stuarts, who were catholics. Only in 1689 "The Glorious Revolution," did the English toss out Catholic James II.
So about 1530 in Europe, the German princes came to an accomodation: Cuius regio, euius religio: "Whose the rule, his the religion." England carried on hot and heavy after that.

We are a pragmatic people. And we got lucky. If Mary Tudor hadn't died of natural causes when she did, things might have been different.
